Where’s the NRA when we need them?

Often law-abiding, short-term gun owner Hunter Biden may have lied on a form, but does that negate his Second Amendment rights to own a handgun while on crack cocaine?! If the Founding Fathers were clear about anything it was the right of drug addicts to possess fire arms! I mean, if the government can take guns away from Americans on crack what about Americans who have had a few too many cocktails?! Law-abiding (well, okay, semi-law abiding) Americans must be able to protect themselves against threats, even imaginary threats cooked up while in their drug-addled states! Before you know it, it’ll be illegal to get drunk in a bar, get in your car to drive home and carry around a loaded Glock in the glove compartment to keep yourself safe! Next thing you know, we’ll all be speaking Russian! Oh wait, we kind of like the Russians now. We’ll all be speaking Ukrainian!

Seriously folks, the NRA has opposed legislation that would ban semi-automatic weapons and bump stocks. They’re opposed to red flag laws to keep guns out of the hands of the suicidal, the mentally ill and those who commit domestic violence. They’re even against denying guns to suspected terrorists on the FBI’s no-fly list. So, why aren’t they up in arms (sorry) about the charges against Hunter Biden?

Biden is charged with lying on a background check form about his use of drugs at the time he bought a gun. Based on the evidence presented so far he probably did lie. But he owned the gun for all of 11 days and he claims it was never so much as loaded. What he did was wrong and he should pay a fine. This should have been settled out of court.

So, given the NRA’s opposition to anything that would deny a gun to anybody, where’s their statement of outrage over the charges against Hunter Biden? You won’t find it.

We’ve been clear here at YSDA that we thought the bookkeeping charges against Donald Trump were penny ante. Trump lied on some forms about his payoff to a porn star. Hunter Biden probably lied on some form about his drug use. Both were wrong. Both should have admitted their wrong-doing and paid a fine. Neither is the crime of the century. We shouldn’t be wasting time talking about either situation.

But you can’t be outraged about one set of charges while claiming the other charges are bogus. To be consistent you have to view both the Trump lies and the Hunter Biden lies as equally serious or equally inconsequential. We’re going to go with inconsequential.
