Who’s the Best Dressed Football Coach?

Now that Bill Belichick is out, who is the best dressed football coach on the sidelines?

Beilichick, who made $25 million a year, dressed like some poor schlub who only made, like, $10 million a year. His trademark hoodie matched his generally snarly, I-don’t-give-a-damn demeanor. I don’t know what the point was. Maybe he was trying to project a blue collar scrappiness. I thought he should have upped his game.

There was a day when coaches dressed like the authority figures they are and paid some respect to the game. They didn’t look like they just rolled out of bed. Oh, we got a game today? Huh, guess I’d better get over to the stadium. Honey, where’s my other sock?

Give me Vince Lombardi in his classic camel hair coat or Tom Landry in his fedora or Bear Bryant in his checkerboard hat.

Today my candidate for best dressed coach is Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck. He has the right combination of old school formality (he wears a tie) and new school casual (he usually wears a stylish sweater). I think Matt LaFleur does okay in his business casual. Feel free to nominate your Best Dressed Coach, either from the annals of history or ripped from the headlines, below.

And, yes. It’s January. It’s cold. It’s dark. We’re trying lighten things up around here.

  1. PJ wears sunglasses, even at night, which disqualifies him for any fashion awards, in my opinion. Plus, he coaches the Gophers.
