For Memorial Day here’s a song by Tim Buckley, Once I Was. It’s not specifically about veterans, but it was used in the final scene of the 1978 Vietnam War drama, Coming Home.
It’s a poignant reminder of the cost of war and lives cut short, sometimes to protect our freedom or to fight tyranny, but sometimes, as in this case, for vague geopolitical reasons that never justified the price that was paid. But regardless of the reasons for fighting offered by politicians, the young people who fought for us deserve our gratitude and those who died deserve our reverence.
You can listen to Once I Was here.
Have a nice Memorial Day.

When I see footage of a destroyed military vehicle in Ukraine, I think of the young men who died inside it.
