Yesterday I attended a lovely celebration of the life of Gov. Tony Earl at Monona Terrace. I guess there were about 200 or more people there, most of them, as you’d expect, Democrats.
But there was a fair sprinkling of prominent Republicans too, including Tommy Thompson, former Senate majority leader Mary Panzer, and retired Supreme Court Justices David Prosser and Jon Wilcox. I’m sure there were more Republicans in the crowd that I didn’t see.
It occurred to me that it would have been nice to see an active Republican pol there. What would it have taken for the state’s leading Republican, Speaker Robin Vos, to show up to pay his respects? After all, Earl has been out of office for four decades and he was widely liked and respected across the aisle.
Vos could have, at no cost, added a much needed grace note to the bruising state of our current politics.
