Wisconsin Forest headquarters at Trout Lake. Modern forestry was born near this spot in 1911, when Wisconsin’s first State Forester, E.M. Griffith, began a program to plant seedlings on cut over land.

A legacy of Mr. Griffith, and others like him, is the offering of tree seedlings, by State Departments Of Natural Resources to residents in most states. Seed companies, that were formerly just sources of pasture/hay seed, have now branched out to include prairie grasses and forbs. And the changing public views of what constitutes “natural beauty”.
