You know it’s a crazy mixed-up world when I agree with the NRA.
In its ongoing effort to scapegoat transgender people for every problem under the sun, the Trump administration has floated the idea of restricting gun ownership for anyone experiencing gender dysphoria.
The response from the NRA and other gun rights groups was swift. “The Second Amendment isn’t up for debate,” the NRA said in a social media post on Friday. “NRA does not, and will not, support any policy proposals that implement sweeping guns bans that arbitrarily strip law-abiding citizens of their Second Amendment rights without due process.”

Now, to be sure, the NRA is opposed to any kind of gun control, even things that are modest and sensible, like universal background checks. If it were up to these guys, three-year olds would be carrying assault rifles to preschool.
But at least they’re consistent. Crazy, yes. But consistent in their insanity. You would expect that your average NRA member is not necessarily on board with the LGBTQ+ agenda, but when it comes to owning guns they’re all in. You might even hope that they’d take the next step and also vigorously oppose Trump’s efforts to drum transgender people out of the military, where they might carry guns to protect our country. (Don’t hold your breath.)
What prompted Trump’s Justice Department to suggest this in the first place was the shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, where it is alleged that the shooter was transgender. But if you’re going to start restricting gun ownership based on the sex of the shooter, then look out straight white guys.
I doubt the NRA was making that calculation, but they should. This is why we have laws protecting those charged with crimes. It’s not to protect criminals. It’s to protect anyone accused of a crime. Who knows, maybe that will include you someday.
There’s a broader lesson here, which we can only hope gun rights advocates and other Trumpers might stop to consider. When we protect the rights of any unpopular group we’re looking out for ourselves when someday the tables are turned.
Of course the NRA was making that calculation. As does anyone who says hate speech is free speech. The problem as always is eventually it will be your enemy who defines the terms.

“But if you’re going to start restricting gun ownership based on the sex of the shooter, then look out straight white guys.”
IMO, they’re not talking about sex/gender as much as documented history of mental illness. And the overwhelming majority (and off the demographic percentages charts) of murderers are not straight white guys; integrity should correct the record.
And the left, not to put too fine a point to it, is $#!tting themselves sideways on this; posted to X: (bolds, caps/italics mine)
”At a virtual meeting this afternoon lasting just over two hours—attended by Democrat Party influencers Olivia Julianna, Harry Sisson, JoJo From Jerz, Aaron Parnas, Micah Erfan, and others—THE MOOD WAS ONE OF PANIC AND DISARRAY over how to respond to reports that Trump’s DOJ is exploring a gun ban for individuals with gender dysphoria.
“According to a source familiar with the discussions, MEMBERS WERE SHARPLY DIVIDED ON MESSAGING. Sisson and Parnas pushed for adopting a fully pro–Second Amendment stance, while Julianna and Erfan argued for a more pragmatic approach—emphasizing the threats of violence faced by transgender people and their ‘SPECIAL NEED’ FOR FIREARMS, while still advocating for broader restrictions on the general population.
“At several points, tensions flared and the discussion grew heated. JoJo lashed out at Sisson, calling him an ‘insensitive a-hole’ in light of the recent shooting.
“By the end of the call, THE CONSENSUS WAS TO SIDESTEP THE ISSUE ALTOGETHER FOR NOW–SHIFTING FOCUS TO ATTACKING RFK Jr AND PIVOTING THE CONVERSATION TOWARD EPSTEIN WHEN PRESSED.”

I wasn’t referring to murderers here, but mass shooters. Here’s the record on mass shooters:
Gender: Mass shooters are overwhelmingly male, with some databases showing 98% or more.
Race/Ethnicity: While White and Black individuals are the largest racial groups in U.S. mass shootings, the specific percentages vary by study and data source.
So, I may have been on thin ice when I wrote about white men and I don’t have data on sexual identity, but certainly almost all mass shooters are men.
