The Quote & Quiz for 10/27/23

This week’s quote goes to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy who, according to a story in the New York Times, Tweeted (sorry, Xed):

“Seriously? We can’t let kids celebrate Halloween? Give me a break.”

  1. Murphy’s statement came in response to:

A) A decision by a New Jersey school district to ban the celebration of Halloween in its schools due to diversity, equity and inclusion considerations.

B) A decision by Camden to ban trick-or-treating due to an outbreak of gun violence.

C) A decision by Bruce Springsteen to turn off his lights and pull his shades and pretend he wasn’t home at his New Jersey mansion during trick-or-treating time.

D) A decision by New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez to pretend that all the guys in his office wearing FBI jackets were just kids dressed up and looking for candy.

2. The New Jersey school district decided to replace Halloween (ok, so I tipped you off to the answer to #1, so sue me) with:

A) A celebration of wiccan culture and religion.

B) A fall/harvest festival.

C) A Taylor Swift themed karaoke contest.

D) An extra hour of active shooter training.

3. Murphy is the first Democrat to hold the New Jersey governor’s office in:

A) 10 years.

B) 24 years.

C) 44 years.

D) 64 years.

4. When informed of Murphy’s comment about Halloween his predecessor, Chris Christie, said:

A) That was very insensitive to all the boys and girls and questioning children that were offended by the forced celebration of Halloween.

B) Let’s shut down the bridge to that district!

C) I never embraced Barack Obama. The stage was slippery and I accidentally fell into his arms.

D) Shit, that’s what I would have said.

5. Murphy has been an outspoken liberal on most issues, so this kind of statement may have been:

A) Calculated to break with the left to make him a more appealing future national candidate.

B) Just an honest reaction that matches the feelings of about 99% of his constituents.

C) An appeal to common sense.

D) Another indication that more liberal pols are figuring out that this kind of stuff is killing the Democrats.

Answers:

1: A

2. B

3. C

4: D (he didn’t really say that, but that’s what he was thinking)

5: All answers are valid.

That’s all for this week. Looks to be a blustery weekend up here in the North Woods. Great weather for splitting firewood. See you back here on Monday.

  1. According to the Internet, Jon Corzine, a Democrat, served as New Jersey governor from 2006 through 2010. So, the answer to No. 3 should be eight years, not 44. Are you just checking to see if we’re paying attention?
